Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has welcomed media reports that Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has decided to delay any divisional changes in the border region until Brexit uncertainty passes.
Deputy Smyth commented, “Following my call last Friday that it is not the time to make these changes, it is very welcome and will come as a relief to many that changes to the division serving our area has been delayed until arrangements due to Brexit become clearer.
“Today sees a long-awaited Armed Response Unit deployed to Cavan-Monaghan. It is a sorry situation that an Armed Response Unit has become needed, but it will give some piece of mind to residents fearful in the current climate.
“I join my Party Leader in the call for a robust cross-border agency to tackle these dangerous elements in our communities,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
