Deputy Smyth, who has raised this matter in the Dáil with the Minister for Justice commented, “I am extremely disappointed that Monaghan is to lose its status as a divisional headquarters under Commissioner Harris’ reform plans. The divisional headquarters for Cavan/Monaghan will now be based in Drogheda. Parts of Cavan are more than 140km from Drogheda.
“I appreciate the need for reform and am broadly supportive of the plan which promises to ensure that more Gardai are serving on the frontline. I do believe however that there is a special case to be made for retaining divisional headquarter capacity in Cavan/Monaghan at this time.
“The growing concerns surrounding the impact of Brexit to the most recent, dreadful attack on Quinn Industrial Holdings Executive, Kevin Lunney, it is clear that there are specific and unique policing requirements in this region and I look forward to making that case directly to the Commissioner,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
