Decision on major Multi Sports Facility in Cavan expected later this year

Niamh Smyth TD72 applications received under Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has received confirmation that a decision will be made on a large scale Multi-sports Facility for county Cavan by the Minister for Sport Shane Ross later this year.

Commenting, Deputy Niamh Smyth says, “Minister Ross has confirmed that he has received an application by Cavan County Council which if successful will see this project move to design stage. I have been advised that 72 applications in total have been received by the Department under Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) which has at least €100 million available to groups across the country.”

“I have been contacted by a number of sports enthusiasts across all disciplines who say this facility is badly needed for the county. A feasibility study has been carried out for this facility and a number of sites have been identified.”

“I spoke with Minister Ross in recent weeks on this and I will continue to press the need for such a facility in County Cavan. This facility once built would include four pitches, one 4G pitch for Gaelic, Soccer and Rugby, Basketball Courts, Hockey courts, facilities for badminton, tennis, and athletics etc. Every sport you could possibly imagine will be catered for here.”

“It’s envisaged that €20 million will see this project completed. I have been advised by the Minister that details of all applications received will be published on the Department’s website as soon as possible. I have also been informed that it will take a number of months to have all of them assessed with a decision expected towards the end of this year. I will continue to liaise with and press Minister Ross on this issue,” concluded Deputy Smyth.

(Details Supplied) Application by Cavan County Coucnil under Stream 1 funding under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF)

REPLY
The Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund opened for applications on 19th November 2018 and the closing date for receipt of applications was 17th April.  I can confirm that an application was received from the local authority referred to by the Deputy.

72 applications were received in total and my officials are currently undertaking an initial assessment of them. Details of all applications received will be published on the Department’s website as soon as possible.

In view of the detailed information contained in each application, I am advised that it will take a number of months to have all of them assessed.  Accordingly, I expect that it will be towards the end of this year before allocations are announced.
