Hike in transport costs for the elderly will isolate those in rural Ireland – Smyth

NIAMH PROFILE-New policy branded ‘cruel and nasty’-

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has said the introduction of fares for transport to day services used by pensioners in Cavan-Monaghan will only increase rural isolation.

Deputy Smyth commented, “Last week I raised with the Taoiseach the fees which have been introduced for transport users with special needs attending day services.  Their introduction is a cruel and nasty policy decision. Since last week I have been contacted by a further two old age pensioner groups which have been notified that they will also be charged for transport to their day services.

“It is disgraceful that the most vulnerable in society have been targets for these fees which will cost up to 1k per year and is simply beyond many people.

“This week I have appealed to the Tánaiste to see if he is any more amenable than his Taoiseach to putting pressure on the Transport and Health Ministers to work together and put an end to this horrible development,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
