Deputy Smyth commented “It is all well and good announcing investment for an enterprise centre, yet we have main streets lying empty and a non-existent motorway infrastructure for our counties.
“A recent report revealed a 13.1% vacancies rate in Cavan and 13.2% vacancies rate in Monaghan. Living in Bailieborough and with a constituency office in Castleblayney I know very well of the vacancies and empty shop units in towns across Cavan-Monaghan. We should be encouraging businesses and jobs back into these vacant sites.
“We have a long awaited East West link corridor. €2 million has already been invested in this project with nothing substantial delivered to date. The government ought to focus their attention on this project rather than rehashed enterprise announcements which will not deliver anything for the area.
“A significant road infrastructure through Cavan-Monaghan would have far reaching economic benefit for the border region and the government must progress this urgently,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
