Small increase in Arts income highlight Government neglect of sector – Smyth

Niamh Smyth TDFianna Fáil spokesperson on Arts and Heritage Niamh Smyth TD has said the Government continues to neglect the Arts sector as latest Central Statistics Office figures reveal a 0.5% increase in weekly earnings in the arts and entertainment sector.

Deputy Smyth commented “The CSO figures released this week highlight a continued neglect of the Arts and Entertainment sector. Those working in this industry work long, hard hours yet have seen minimal increases in their weekly income.

“As my Party Leader explained at our Ard Fheis, arts and culture played a central role in building our unique identity.  They help us to question ourselves and to find new horizons. This government needs to understand that the surest way to destroy our creative communities is to deny people the opportunity to earn a decent wage or have some prospect of a secure job.
“It’s time for the government to stop taking arts funding away from independent bodies and putting it into schemes controlled by Ministers,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
