Government overspending on Children’s Hospital sees collateral damage for Cavan-Monaghan- Smyth

niamh_transport_edit_7Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has called on the Minister for Transport to clarify the status of the A5 road project which would see Cavan Monaghan linked to Derry with an improved road infrastructure.

Deputy Smyth said “There is much frustration in Cavan and Monaghan following the news that €27 million which had been earmarked for the Dublin to Derry road will now be used to finish the National Children’s Hospital. This new link has the potential to attract jobs and investment into our counties. It would also lead to a quicker, safer journey to Dublin from the north west.

“It is emerging that this project will see further delays because of over spending at the Children’s Hospital. It is obvious the government must make up the costs of the disastrous over spend at the National Children’s Hospital yet diverting money away from the A5 road plans should not be the first project hit.

“This badly needed road has seen continuous delays, including a lack of leadership from the Northern Irish Assembly and those in Sinn Fein who have walked away from their positions. The government must clarify exactly what their intentions are with this vital piece of road infrastructure to give clarity to communities crying out for this road in Cavan and Monaghan,” concluded Deputy Smyth.
