Smyth seeks answers on Gate Theatre allegations

Arts Debate 5Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Arts & Heritage Niamh Smyth has written to the Chairman and Clerk of the Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht requesting the appearance of the Chairman of the Gate Theatre and the Director of Arts Council as a matter of urgency.

Deputy Smyth commented, “The recent allegations of bullying and sexual harassment made against the former director of the Gate Theatre are extremely serious and must be treated with the upmost gravity.

“These issues are a matter of public interest and concern, and given the fact that a significant proportion of the Gate Theatre’s funding is awarded by the Arts Council, it is imperative that we are provided with a full explanation as to the chronology of events leading to these allegations.  There are also serious questions to answer with regard to the governance structures within the theatre itself.

“Earlier today I wrote to the Chairman and Clerk of the Oireachtas Committee on Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to express my concerns and to request the appearance of the Chairman of the Gate Theatre and the Director of Arts Council before the members.  I have subsequently spoken to the Committee Chair who has indicated his support for my request.

“I believe the Committee has an important role to play in clarifying these issues and ensuring that events such as these are not allowed to occur again the future”.
