Fianna Fáil TD Niamh Smyth has welcomed the news that 62 projects in Cavan and Monaghan are to benefit from CLÁR funding. €8.24 million euro has been allocated to 651 projects nationwide under CLÁR 2016.

Commenting Deputy Niamh Smyth said, “Cavan has received €498,184 for 33 projects consisting of safety enhancement works at schools, 6 new playgrounds and upgrades to existing playgrounds in the county. In Monaghan €356,440 has been allocated for 29 projects. These consist of community facilities, schools, playgrounds, and public parks, the provision of carparks and lighting and safety improvements to our roads.”

“There were a number of projects that I would have liked to receive further funding but unfortunately this wasn’t the case. Next time I would like to see a greater emphasis on these.”

CLÁR is a targeted investment programme which aims to provide funding for small infrastructural projects in rural areas that have experiences significant depopulations. The fund was reopened in October by Minister of State for Regional Economic Development Michael Ring TD and funding is being provide under these three measures – Safety package for schools/community facilities; Outdoor Play Facilities – Enhancement Scheme/support for the development of Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) and local Access Roads.

Projects to benefit in Cavan

Deputy Smyth outlined some of the projects to receive funding in County Cavan. “ €22,000 in funding has been allocated for a new pedestrian crossing to facilitate St Anne’s National School and the Bailieborough Model School. €14,000 has been given for Speed Safety Signs on the Monaghan Road as you approach the Holy Family School in Cootehill. This is welcome as I know it has been a concern raised by parents and staff.”

“There are new pedestrian crossings coming to improve safety at 10 schools throughout the county. They are Kilnaleck National School; Butlersbridge National School; Mountnugent National School; Milltown National School; Dun an Ri School, Kingscourt; Virginia mixed National School; St Clare’s National School and St Clare’s College, Ballyjamesduff; on the Virginia road as you approach Bailieborough Community School and Arvagh National School. Each project will receive €22,000 respectively.”

Deputy Smyth continued, “Speed safety signs are also going to be erected on the Virginia Road as you approach Bailieborough Community School and on the Bailieborough Shercock Road as you approach St. Aiden’s Comprehensive School in Cootehill. This is also welcome as parents have been raising their concerns about the speed of traffic along these routes.”

Playgrounds

“€165,500 in funding has been allocated for six new playgrounds in County Cavan; Cavan County Council will fund over €33,000 of the total cost of these new projects. Meanwhile, four existing playgrounds are set to be improved with over €88,000 allocated for resurfacing works under CLÁR.

“€24,000 has been allocated to Kilnaleck for a new adult playground and €17,000 has been set aside for a new children’s playground. Killyconnan has received funding for €23,600 from the Department for a €30,000 new playground for children at Cuttragh. Cavan County Council will fund the balance of €5,900 for this project.

“Drumgoon will also get a new adult playground worth €20,000. Dowra will get a €24,000 new children’s playground while the community of Redhills is set to get a new children’s and adult playground valued at €45,000.

“Also, funding of close to €90,000 has been also allocated to resurface playgrounds in Kingscourt, Ballinagh, Swanlinbar and Ballyconnell.

“€2,000 has been allocated for Road Markings on the L6517 at Killyconnan National School, €2,000 has also been allocated to Corlea National School to upgrade road markings and €2,000 has been also given to Killinkere National School and Muff National Schools respectively to upgrade road markings on approach to the schools. Meanwhile, Killdallen National School, Curraghvah National School, Kill National School and Greaghrahan National School will all get€1000 towards upgrades to road markings at the school.”

Deputy Smyth Concluded, “I am disappointed that more money wasn’t allocated for safety measures at Killinkere National School. I have been working on this issue and impressing upon the local authority the need for more safety measures at the school. Also, I am disappointed that additional funding wasn’t given for public lighting at Corlea Chapel and St. Josephs National School. I have also been raising this issue with the council following concerns raised with my office over the safety hazard the lack of lighting is posing. I will continue to raise these issues with the relevant officials.”
