Cllr Smyth Warns of Dangers Posed to Pedestrians Who Cannot Walk Safely to the Local Playground

Recently at a Council meeting, Cllr Smyth raised the urgent need for improvements to the footpaths in Shercock and while working on that she has also investigated funding streams to build a new much need footpath from the town out to the local playground.  ‘This is a massive project undertaking for the local community but Shercock / Killann Rural Development have expressed huge enthusiasm to see it happen.

Working with SKRD Cllr Smyth submitted a Community Involvement Application but with the overall cost of this particular project coming in at €270k, it is over and above the total amount allocated to the Council for the entire County. ‘Other options must be investigated by Cavan County Council to provide this much needed facility.  Pedestrian safety is not an option it’s a must’ stated Cllr Smyth.  ‘Children and parents must be able to walk safely to the local playground.  Otherwise this important facility is not reaching its full potential and completely excludes sectors of the community that do not drive or don’t have access to a car during the daytime’.

In recent weeks Cllr Smyth has worked closely with residents and business people in Shercock and is thrilled with the recent announcement from Cavan County Council that funding has been allocated to two projects in Shercock that will bring a splash of colour and help local residents living in Corkerstown Housing Estate to improve their recreational space over the summer months.

‘I am delighted that we have secured funding for Shercock / Killann Rural Development towards installing new poles to erect hanging baskets in the main street to brighten and add a splash of colour the main street.’  This community group works very hard for the betterment of Shercock, therefore support from the local authority is important and rewarding for volunteers who give so much of themselves and their spare time to get things done in the community.’
