‘Never has a county been so excited about an event’ is how one of my colleagues on Cavan County Council described the build up to 2010 Fleadh. Since it was established in 1954, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann has showcased the best of Irish music, dance and culture. I have no doubt that this year’s Fleadh will prove that our culture and traditions are as strong as ever.
Cavan County Council and the organising committee have been busy getting the county ready for this enormous display of national music, dance and culture. As part of our preparations, Mórtás an Chabháin have invited 10 local contemporary artists to create modern art installations in and around Cavan town. I was delighted to have been asked to be one of the chose ten.
These installations are acting as precursors to the main Fleadh 2010 events later in August and we in Cavan are keen to showcase our own local talent to the rest of the world.
My installation which is in Cavan Court House is called ‘Lyrical Urban Landscapes‘ and uses a translucent material and gold leaf to contextualise my interest in mapping and location. The main elements of art in this installation explore line, pattern, shape and texture. I have made use of translucent material to reflect the ever evolving architectural landscape of Cavan town.
Fleadh 2010 will be of huge benefit to not only Cavan town but to other areas within our county. It will provide a massive boost to our local tourism economy with thousands upon thousands of domestic and foreign visitors coming to spend a week in the Breffni County. Our local shops and businesses will see an influx of customers but most of all, it will provide our county and its people with a fabulous week of ceol and craic.
What more could any one want in the month of August? I for one will be there!! So bring your family, come with your friends and be part of something truly extraordinary!
